Gmail has more than 3 billion users today for both business and personal use. Artificial intelligence, such as Smart Reply and spam filters, has helped with this.
Gmail is significantly different today from when it first launched in 2004 with how we manage emails. Although receiving and sending information emails remains the most important aspect of emailing, users must now also understand how to effectively manage incoming information due to increased incoming message volume. Therefore Google is moving Gmail further along into the Gemini age. Gmail will become a personal and responsive inbox assistant.
Ask Your Inbox Anything with AI Overviews
The contents of your inbox contain a plethora of information that can be beneficial, however, in order to effectively locate this information, one had to have extensive search experience and good amounts of patience. Even after locating the information within the email thread, it would be necessary to navigate through large volumes of information in that email thread in order to retrieve the information you were after. This is where the AI Overview feature of Gmail is very helpful.
The AI Overview feature of Gmail functions similarly to Google Search's AI Overview feature; it organizes your information from large email threads and presents it to you in a concise, easy-to-understand format.
Also, you can now ask your Gmail inbox specific questions in natural language. Instead of searching through the months of email for an email from a plumber who gave you a quote on your bathroom remodel, you simply ask, "Who was the plumber who gave me a bathroom remodel quote last year?" Powered by Gemini’s advanced reasoning, Gmail instantly surfaces and summarizes the exact details you’re looking for.
AI Overview conversation summaries are rolling out today to all users at no cost. The ability to ask your inbox questions with AI Overviews is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Get More Done, Faster
Gmail is also expanding its writing tools to help users work more efficiently. Starting today, everyone can use Help Me Write to draft new emails or refine existing ones. The Suggested Replies are the next step in the evolution of Smart Replies by considering the full context of conversations and providing suggestions for improvements that match your voice with one click on the button.
When planning an event with your family and a cousin asks if she should bring cake or pie, Suggested Replies will take a message immediately, using your voice (it's a draft) so that you can edit it before you send it.
The new Proofreading feature includes additional checks for grammar, tone, and style, ensuring that all messages are written in a professional, polished manner. Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are available to all users at no cost, while Proofread is offered to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Beginning next month, Help Me Write will become even more personalized by drawing on context from your other Google apps.
Focus on What Matters with AI Inbox
Not Every E-mail Requires Immediate Action. The New A.I. Inbox is to Help Eliminate Communication Overload and Focus on What Is Most Important.
The A.I. Inbox is your personalized daily news summary; it identifies important and actionable items for you. It helps you stay on task and organized by automatically identifying priority e-mails based on key characteristics of the sender and/or recipient, including who you communicate with most frequently, who is in your address book, and inferred relationships based on message content.
The A.I. Inbox analyses all of this data securely using the privacy protections you have come to expect from Google. You will always have control over your data while being alerted to time-sensitive information such as upcoming bills and dentist appointments. The A.I. Inbox is currently undergoing a beta testing phase with a limited number of trusted users, followed by expected full-scale deployment in the next several months.
Try the New Gmail Experience
Many of these upgrades are powered by Gemini 3. The new features begin rolling out today in the U.S. for Gmail users, including Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The initial launch supports English, with additional languages and regions expected in the months ahead.
