Testing has begun on Instagram Plus, a paid subscription that gives you access to premium features on Instagram. Currently, only testers in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines will have a chance to use this service, but after completion of the test time frame, it is expected to expand into the rest of the world.
Instagram Plus offers some very detailed analytics on How Many Times Did Someone View Your Story, Who Viewed Your Story Anonymously and many more. These subscriptions start at about $1.00-$2.00. The testers will have access to these statistics and other premium features for the duration of the time they test the program.
The head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said these test subscriptions are to help determine which of the new features are popular with users. There will be multiple tests so that all of the new features can be developed at the same time, as well as to see how popular each test item is with users.
The company announced that it is moving to become able to offer a new subscription based on premium subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The executive leadership of Meta has stated that they are looking to develop multiple other revenue sources outside of advertisement revenue in order to reduce the amount of regulatory scrutiny the company is under regarding their advertising practices and the possibility of antitrust violations that could arise from this scrutiny. They will also be working on developing new subscription features that users would be able to access to enhance their creativity, such as the Vibes Video Generator, as well as productivity type features.
Early screenshots of Social Media have shown their first tiered pricing plans based on local consumer pricing power. In Mexico monthly access to Instagram will cost 39 pesos, in Japan it will cost 319 yen and in the Philippines it will cost 65 pesos. Meta has stated that while they plan to charge people to use Instagram, its core Instagram features will still be available for free until they've had enough time to gather enough insights to decide how best to bundle features for mass distribution.
A major concern for Instagram is that they will create subscriber fatigue due to layering subscription based services on top of their existing creator program (such as Reels bonus). If successful, this could lead to a rapid acceleration of other monetization approaches including ad-free browsing and exclusive content access which will help Instagram challenge the recurring revenue of those services like X Premium or Snapchat+.
The analyst community believes that these early tests provide insight into how to price their subscription service based upon subscription economics of start low (low price) and then go high (premium) as they add artificial intelligence. Based on consumer response in pricing, the Subscription Testing will determine if a larger broader subscription service will assist in supplementing the drop in growth of traditional advertising through targeted advertising.
