Stablecoin Crypto Supply Hits $315B in Q1 as USDC Gains, USDT Slips

Stablecoin supply reached a record $315 billion in the first quarter, expanding $8 billion despite broader crypto market weakness, according to CEX.IO data. The growth slowest since Q4 2023 highlighted stablecoins' decoupling as 75% of crypto trading volume flowed through them, the highest share ever recorded. Transaction volumes exceeded $28 trillion, driven by automated bots comprising 76% of activity while retail transfers plunged 16% steepest drop on record.

USDC grew roughly $2 billion to $78 billion, posting 220% expansion since late 2023 on institutional B2B settlements and payroll integrations. Average transaction size of $557 half USDT's reflected programmatic usage, with 631% quarterly transfer surge aligning with MiCA compliance and GENIUS Act tailwinds. Circle's regulated approach captured DeFi liquidity and enterprise adoption.

USDT shed about $3 billion in first quarterly contraction since Q2 2022, compressing market share below 58%. Retail dominance persisted with $19.1 trillion annual volume 73% of low-value flows but EU restrictions and redemption dynamics eroded growth.

Divergence signals bifurcation: USDC's institutional trajectory versus USDT's retail reliance, with "Supplyagnostication paradox" marking utility maturation over speculation. In the year 2025, stablecoins surpassed the combined volumes of Visa and Mastercard at $33 trillion led by USDC, accounting for $18.3 trillion.

As stablecoins have demonstrated resilience through btc's 47% peak to trough decline, they will continue to serve as a defensive asset class. The introduction of emerging issuers like usd1 to challenge the duopoly of visa and mastercard through the tokenization of real world assets (rwas) and payments, suggests that by 2027 if on-chain is adopted even further creating a total of $500 billion in volume.
