The global battery industry is working to become safer and cleaner. A group called the Global Battery Alliance is leading this work with help from many countries and companies.
The group started in 2017 after reports showed child labor and unsafe mining work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Many batteries used in phones and electric cars need cobalt from this country.
Today, more than 150 groups are part of the alliance. These include car makers, mining firms, banks, governments and aid groups. They all want the battery industry to grow in a safer and fairer way.
Big companies like Tesla, Apple and Panasonic Energy are also involved. The alliance says teamwork is needed because no one company can fix these problems alone.
One major goal is battery recycling. Experts say battery parts like lithium, cobalt and nickel can be reused many times. This can lower mining waste and reduce harm to the environment.
The group is also building a digital tool called a battery passport. This tool can show where battery materials come from and how they move through the supply chain. Buyers can use this information to choose cleaner and safer products.
New rules in the European Union are also pushing companies to improve. Firms that want to sell batteries in Europe must now follow stronger clean energy and safety rules.
The story also highlights the role of China in battery production. Experts say the battery industry cannot grow without Chinese companies because the country is a major battery maker.
Many experts believe batteries are key for the future. They are needed for electric cars, solar power and clean energy storage. Better batteries may help reduce the world’s use of oil and gas over time.
The alliance says the path ahead will not be easy. Still, leaders believe global teamwork can help make the battery industry cleaner, safer and better for the planet.
