Global Sustainability Challenge Opens for Young Farm Innovators

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has opened applications for the Global AgriInno Challenge 2026. The program supports young people working on better farming and food ideas for island communities around the world.

The contest is also supported by Zhejiang University and Pinduoduo. Organizers are looking for smart and simple ideas that can improve food systems and help people facing climate problems.

The challenge is open to startups, students, researchers and small business teams from many countries. Teams must create digital tools or new farming systems that can help farming, fishing, food delivery or climate safety.

The main goal is to support Small Island Developing States. These islands often face floods, strong storms, rising sea levels and food shortages. Many island families also depend on imported food which can be costly.

The program focuses on four important areas. These include better farming, healthy food, cleaner nature and better jobs for local people. Organizers want ideas that can help communities grow food in safer and smarter ways.

Applications will remain open until 20 June 2026. After the first round, selected teams will join online training and expert coaching sessions. The top finalists will later travel to Hangzhou for workshops and final pitch events.

Some teams may also get a chance to present their projects during the FAO Science and Innovation Forum in Rome later in the year. This could help young innovators meet investors and global leaders.

Organizers say the challenge is becoming one of the top global events for youth led farming innovation. They believe young people can bring fresh ideas to solve food and climate problems.

Experts also say digital farming tools are becoming more important each year. Smart systems can help farmers save water, protect crops, track weather and improve food supply chains.

The challenge hopes to build stronger and more sustainable food systems for the future while giving young innovators a global platform to grow their ideas.
