Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Explodes During Florida Testing

Blue Origin has had a major blow after one of its New Glenn rockets blew up while being tested at a facility in Florida. This unfortunate event represents a huge setback for Jeff Bezos’ space company as it tries to establish itself as a real competitor in the commercial launch industry and catch up to the lead that SpaceX has built up in the field of reusable rocket technology over the last 10 years.

Testing rockets is an inherently dangerous and difficult process; explosions during ground or flight testing happen frequently. Even the most successful rocket programs in history, many of which became known as the world’s most reliable, have experienced failures during the development phases before they could be successful at the launch of their rockets into space. SpaceX has seen many high-profile explosions while developing its Starship program before it could be successful in defining its program through successful launches. An explosion during testing does not mean that a rocket program is over.

The context is equally important too; Blue Origin has been constantly criticized about how slowly it is developing compared to SpaceX's rapid pace of development with such a focus on iteration, as well as with other commercial launch service providers moving forward at an even greater pace. The New Glenn rocket represents the most ambitious rocket being attempted by the company, designed specifically for competing with the best commercial/government launching contracts which require demonstrably reliable systems before they can be awarded those contracts. Because of this, a large set of failures in this phase of development will significantly delay the timeline in developing new rockets and also cause numerous issues to potential customers/investors who will want to know answers regarding what happened during this testing incident.

The investigation of a testing failure such as this will play a key role in defining how much of a setback there actually is on future tests. Once all the facts regarding what caused the explosion are completely understood (i.e. whether it was caused by a fundamental design issue or a small technical issue), then it will be possible to understand how the findings from this incident will affect future tests.

Jeff Bezos' financial backing will allow Blue Origin to recover quicker than many smaller launch companies, as it gives the company a long runway to recover. The issue for Blue Origin isn't whether or not they can afford to keep going; the question is whether or not they can learn from this failure quickly enough to stay relevant in a rapidly changing launch marketplace where future opportunities for achieving presence are limited.

All major rocket programs have experienced failures. What has set great rocket programs apart from those that are unsuccessful is their ability to cope with their failures with honesty, speed and engineering rigor.
