OpenAI Expands Codex Beyond Coding With New Workplace Tools

The use of AI at work has historically been primarily connected to software engineers.

Developers would utilize AI to provide coding related services (e.g., create code, fix bugs, etc.) and speed up technical projects. Many professionals outside of the technology industry thought that these types of systems were useful but far away from their everyday jobs. That mindset changed rapidly with OpenAI's new Codex capabilities aimed at office workers and knowledge workers.

After the announcement was made, there was sudden buzz around it from all kinds of industries; Analysts, marketers, consultants, designers, and financial professionals all saw a vision that AI could help support and augment their roles/companies significantly outside anything that previously existed. OpenAI has reported approximately 5 million weekly users for Codex and continues to see non-developer professionals as the fastest growing segment of that user base.

The introduction of Codex also included many plugins designed for roles like data analytics, sales, product design, equity investing, creative production, and investment banking to name a few. Each of these plugins combines workflows, instructions, and integrations specifically designed to facilitate specific business operations, which enable users to perform specialized tasks even if they do not have technical skills.

The implications of this update quickly became widely discussed in organizations. Employees no longer need to manually collect data from several different organizations or applications but instead can simply use Codex to extract information from existing workplace tools as well as aggregate and report on data, research, and process repeatable tasks all through one automation solution. OpenAI indicates that many individuals currently use Codex to produce presentations, spreadsheets, contracts, and other types of business documentation.

As part of the update, there were two new features added: Sites and Annotations. Sites allow employees to turn their work into interactive, shareable website(s) or application(s), while Annotations provide greater precision in editing and collaborating within documents or projects.

Many business leaders viewed this new development as affirmation of the trend of AI becoming a more general-purpose productivity platform versus a highly-specialized technical tool. In quick turn, employees began to think about how their jobs would change as routine work was automated.

The launch of Codex is reflective of a larger trend occurring throughout the technology industry; AI is no longer primarily focused on supporting programmers in writing code but is being positioned as a digital partner to assist in performing many of the tasks related to researching, planning, analyzing, communicating, and assisting with decision-making that are part of nearly every profession.
