Microsoft is facing a new storm of controversy over its push for quantum computing: some scientists say the company hasn't shown enough proof for its major claims about its work. The current tiff is centered on Microsoft’s development of topological quantum computing. While this strategy seems promising because it could lead to less error-prone computers, experts say a fundamental, underlying proof for the physics isn’t clear yet.
Topological computing differs sharply from standard quantum computers, which utilize a quantum bit known as a qubit.
This makes these devices more effective in solving complicated equations, since qubits can embody both 0 and 1 at the same time. This is contrasting, because IBM and Google are focusing on superconducting qubits rather than topology. Microsoft has invested in finding these particles because, in their words, “it’s clear that even with 100-times-lower error rates than the rest of the world, an algorithm running on our system would simply be worse off than running the algorithm on a classical machine.” Previous Microsoft topological claims drew concern.
Microsoft research previously said it could produce Majorana particles-the same building blocks for its desired qubits-and claimed proof of existence.
This sparked significant discussion throughout the physics world, before its later removal after another team “reported new experimental data that seemed to contradict the claims.” But the companies recently claimed to have made a leap. Microsoft stated its latest advances with respect to building the necessary qubits were “sufficiently convincing to us… to publish them with a very high degree of confidence,” including the discovery of a predicted particle.
But according to some scientists, the evidence isn’t adequate. The published papers detailing Microsoft’s findings weren’t a peer-reviewed scientific journal: they were more like a preprint - a draft that hadn’t yet undergone the rigorous checks that come with traditional publication. In general, it may take months, if not a year or two, until that becomes available for scientists across the board, who may want to replicate experiments at their institutions.
Microsoft refutes the current claims and asserts that its current publications are ‘””ready to publish”” in a peer-reviewed manner,” despite being unreviewed.
The debate highlighting the difficulties in finding this promising quantum computer is just one in many within the young industry. Although billion dollar investments are being made, there’s no functional quantum computer currently available.
