Italy’s Hodli Becomes First Licensed Crypto Asset Manager The Italian Fintech Hodli has obtained authorization from Bank of Italy to manage crypto assets for its clients under the EU’s new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, making it the first crypto asset manager in Italy to receive full licensing and marking a significant development for the country’s digital asset market. Unlike many crypto companies which offer primarily custody services or exchanges, Hodli can now actively manage its clients' crypto portfolios on their behalf through asset allocation, rebalancing and risk management, merging traditional wealth management with cryptocurrency investment strategies. According to CEO Gianluca Sommariva, Hodli uses AI and proprietary algorithms to optimize long-term crypto investment returns.
"Our ability to actively manage, to create strategies, and to give the necessary securities will be the differentiating factor", said Sommariva.
"With this license we can go head-to-head with the best asset managers in the world". Hodli also plans to partner with financial institutions seeking to offer cryptocurrency investment exposure to their clients without the burden of developing their own in-house digital asset management operations, capitalizing on a growing demand for regulated digital asset solutions. The Hodli license illustrates the broad impact of the European MiCA regulation which seeks to create a unified and clear framework for all crypto-asset service providers across EU member states and protect investors. For Italy, this license represents a crucial step in integrating digital assets into the mainstream financial system, adding a sophisticated investment service beyond its previously common focus on exchanges or custody.
European Markets Becoming More Regulated The move is a sign of the ongoing European trend towards more regulatory clarity for digital asset services, where traditional financial entities are actively seeking licensed partners to navigate this emerging space.
This is an important shift for crypto firms as well, as many are increasingly pursuing licensed status to integrate more fully into regulated markets. Institutional Adoption of Crypto is Expected to Rise Experts anticipate that the presence of regulated asset managers will accelerate the adoption of cryptocurrencies by institutional investors, offering the level of professional oversight, risk management, and regulatory compliance they typically require. The approval of Hodli in Italy, following numerous such licenses across other EU jurisdictions, demonstrates the changing nature of the European crypto market.
As digital assets become more integrated into the mainstream, licensed crypto portfolio management is expected to become a dominant force.
