Google has ramped up its agentic AI ambitions by releasing Gemini Spark on macOS, enabling Mac users to automate complex workflows and engage with files and applications directly from their desktops. The newly released Gemini Spark feature, built into the native Gemini app for Mac, moves beyond a simple chatbot to act as an AI agent that can execute multi-step commands on behalf of a user. This means the assistant can help with tasks such as organizing files, editing documents, and coordinating activities between supported apps (with your permission) rather than just providing information.
The launch is an important part of Google’s overarching AI strategy.
Gemini Spark provides users with the ability to connect specific folders on their Macs, which the assistant can then analyze, edit, rename, and rearrange. Gemini Spark can also be used to update documents, find files and prepare them for sharing, and even create temporary backups of files to prevent unintentional data loss. The assistant can only access files and folders explicitly selected by the user. According to Google, the new feature is designed to help make AI more active in the computing process.
Rather than simply responding to a specific, isolated prompt, Gemini Spark can execute a sequence of actions on files and connected services, reducing the amount of repetitive manual work often involved in everyday productivity.
Google also anticipates wider integrations with third-party applications over time. The release follows Google’s introduction of the native Gemini app for macOS earlier this month. The desktop app allows users quick access to Gemini with a keyboard shortcut, offers screen sharing for more contextual help, and allows direct file uploads from the desktop.
It also includes creative tools to generate images and videos with Google’s latest AI models and requires macOS 15 or higher and is available in the markets Google currently supports. Gemini Spark is launching in an increasingly competitive landscape for AI assistants, with companies actively transitioning from basic chatbots to so-called “agentic” systems that can plan and carry out complex workflows with limited user input. These are essentially envisioned as digital co-workers rather than search engines that simply answer queries.
Google stresses that privacy is a priority with the new feature.
“Gemini Spark only ever accesses the files and folders you explicitly allow,” Google states. Users also maintain control over what the assistant can access or edit. As it has the capability to edit, move, and share files, Google recommends users “review each task before allowing Gemini Spark to proceed.” Gemini Spark is initially available on macOS to eligible Google AI Ultra subscribers in supported regions, and Google plans to roll out the functionality more broadly in the future.
For Google, the release is a further step toward integrating Gemini as a fully fledged productivity tool, not just a chatbot.
By extending its agentic capabilities to the desktop, Google is positioning Gemini as a competitor to a new generation of AI assistants that can perform tasks on users’ devices. As AI continues to evolve from an information retrieval tool to one capable of getting things done, Gemini Spark’s release on macOS could signify the start of the next era of desktop computing, in which AI plays a more active role.
