Miami is now home to Tesla’s latest robotaxi push as the company continues to roll out its autonomous driving ride-hailing service to major U.S. Cities. The new Miami service is yet another effort by Tesla to monetize its autonomous driving software and establish a recurring revenue stream in transportation. The move comes just weeks after it announced its self-driving cars were operating in Austin.

It is the first service to be deployed without a driver on board after years of tests, which now marks a new stage for Tesla’s autonomous driving FSD program.

Eligible Tesla owners will be able to order a robotaxi from their phones, the company announced Tuesday. Currently, only permitted vehicles can operate as robotaxis on select routes during designated hours. The company is working to expand its service area, following its operations in other cities, as it garners more data. The autonomous Tesla’s rely entirely on cameras and AI to determine the right actions on the road, such as identifying pedestrians or traffic signs, while operating as self-driving cars.

In addition to its expansion plans in the U.S., Tesla is also reportedly looking to bring its robotaxi program to countries like Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Canada, Australia and even Saudi Arabia as of this summer.

But there’s tough competition in the sector with Waymo (Alphabet) - whose service already provides driverless ride-hailing in parts of Phoenix and San Francisco - and other self-driving startups aiming for market leadership. Miami - a sprawling metropolis with high demand for transportation - could provide an ideal testing ground. While Tesla focuses on a cameras-only approach for its self-driving cars, competitors such as Waymo often combine cameras, radar, and lidar for more robust perception.

Safety was top priority, the company stated. “In addition to safeguards in the vehicle and monitoring, we are restricting the operational range and times,” the statement read. In its previous announcements, Tesla has emphasized its focus on safety, noting that its vehicles collect vast amounts of real-world data through real-life use.

The company also said it had obtained approval from Florida regulators for the service in its latest announcement.

Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing services are part of the company’s ambition to boost its revenue beyond simply selling cars. Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, has long expressed his vision for the future to be filled with Teslas shuttling passengers without any human drivers. The company is also ramping up investment in its artificial intelligence initiatives and supercomputers that power its autonomous vehicle system. Robotaxis are a key component of Tesla’s long-term plan to shift toward an “AI-powered tech company.”

While the launch in Miami marks significant progress for Tesla, wide-scale autonomous ride-hailing remains a complex undertaking with regulatory and safety hurdles.

The successful implementation and adoption of Tesla’s robotaxis in such a bustling urban environment will likely influence the trajectory of autonomous transportation in the coming years.
