Commercial space company Katalyst is on an orbital rescue mission to keep an old NASA space observatory working for longer, just the latest sign of the space-based satellite repair business booming in orbit. The mission aims to prove that, once a satellite or a space telescope is sent into orbit, the service and equipment can be used to refuel, repair or reposition satellites and thus increase the lifespan of existing hardware in orbit at less cost, and potentially transform government and commercial operators of old hardware. The service vehicle departed for orbit carrying the necessary equipment to rendezvous with the observatory in orbit.
When it gets there, the vehicle will use a few controlled movements to dock with the observatory and the company's service spacecraft to provide it with propulsion to keep it in orbit and extend its time as the telescope with some special scientific capabilities until an observatory could be replaced.
The NASA observatory has lived beyond its design life, but the observatory is still producing lots of data. This will serve as an extension of the satellite without needing to replace it with new hardware. Instead, it will refuel it and help keep it operating so that its valuable observations continue until it is replaced. That has been a recent movement within the aerospace industry where previously once it runs out of fuel or its hardware breaks, it will remain in orbit, and is effectively finished;however now with advances in technology companies have made spacecraft the can perform various tasks such as maintenance, repairs, and repairs.
Katalyst sees the opportunity for their company to present its technology which can have various future capabilities to government and private entities.
Future opportunities with the technology would be refuel communications satellites, continue Earth-orbiting spacecraft that monitor our planet from space, assist the observatory in changing its orbital positioning, or to dispose of it. There are also environmental implications for prolonging the operational use of satellites and limiting the need for replacement missions, as a large portion of Earth's orbital capacity will become the parking space of retired satellites. The global space economy is growing, and companies such as these that can bring these type of services into the void between earth and orbit, are now essential, and with support from agencies such as NASA they will only become more prominent in the years to come and help aid future space missions to other planets such as the moon or Mars. There will be no cost to the science community, and their observations and data collected for years will be extended so long as the space-based service operation can keep it going.
The Katalyst mission indicates the move beyond satellite launches to actually maintaining operations in space with services. With increasing space-based technology maintenance will likely become a commonality similar to maintaining aircraft on the ground, and it could also transform the cost, sustainability, and economics of space exploration.
