Electricity consumption in the U.S. Is set to hit new highs in 2026 and 2027 thanks to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, expansion of data center capacity, and surging demand from homes, businesses, and industry, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The boom in AI computing is shaping up to be one of the biggest new sources of electricity demand in decades as tech firms build ever larger data centers to train and run sophisticated AI models, the EIA reported Wednesday.

The long-term growth in power demand will be driven by these trends, in addition to a projected increase in AI-driven electricity consumption.
Utilities are investing heavily in building new generation, transmitting power across high-voltage lines and modernizing the electricity grid to meet this expected increase in electricity consumption.
The energy industry will continue adding clean energy to the nation's electricity mix while also continuing to add natural gas generation to the mix, while extending the operational life of some existing nuclear power plants, as well as adding battery storage capacity. Natural gas will continue to be the largest source of electricity generation in the U.S. In the next few years, and renewables will continue to take share. “To ensure adequate supplies, the nation’s electricity industry is expanding generation capacity, investing in power delivery networks, and modernizing its infrastructure, including increasing investments in renewable energy and storage while also adding to its natural gas-powered capacity,” the EIA stated in its report.
For a while now, the electricity needed for such massive AI computing power has been seen as a critical link to ensure that all AI, but even existing residential and business power needs can be met without overloading the grid. "Every one of those AI servers that you put in place... Requires immense amounts of energy," said one energy executive previously. This has already helped drive significant investment in power generation, the expansion of the nation’s electricity grid and related infrastructure projects in the last couple of years, although many believe much more is still needed to keep up with demand, even before all the predicted increases from the growing AI boom kick in.
In addition, the surge in electricity demand fueled by AI and other factors is spurring government and industry to push forward with plans for infrastructure investments.
“Policies and regulations that support efficient grid modernization, permitting processes that expedite infrastructure projects, and investment in a diverse portfolio of energy technologies are essential to accommodate rising demand and maintain grid reliability,” according to the EIA. The EIA said that despite potential capacity challenges, the massive rollout of AI has significant economic upside from job creation and technological advancements to boosts in productivity across the economy, though much of this depends on power availability. “This rapid growth is critical to leveraging the full potential of AI and associated applications, but it must be supported by adequate, reliable, and sustainable electricity generation and transmission infrastructure to meet both AI demands and conventional consumer electricity needs,” the EIA warned. The EIA's latest forecast indicates that as artificial intelligence expands rapidly, power consumption will reach all-time highs in the next few years, reinforcing the central role of reliable energy sources in a technologically advancing nation.
