The United Nations (UN) International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has initiated a new global effort to build trust in AI agents, in response to growing efforts worldwide to guide the development and application of artificial intelligence as it grows more autonomous. The initiative will unite governments, technology companies, researchers and standards-setting bodies in a quest to create shared criteria that assess the dependability, explainability, security and accountability of AI agents, whose autonomy is becoming increasingly important in executing tasks with less human oversight. The new initiative seeks to address many challenges brought about by these increasingly sophisticated agents. Like, most intelligent AI chatbots available now on the market, AI agents may be the future, where they can plan tasks, use software applications, make queries on the internet, produce scripts, arrange work and do any task without humans by their side.
Most tech organizations all over the globe believe this advanced form of AI is the next phase for human artificial intelligent interaction. This endeavor seeks to identify ways in which we can make the decision-making process of AI agents transparent, develop ways for their actions to be monitored, ensure interoperability and encourage AI system designs that do not pose a risk to humans. AI agents are no more restricted to performing few specific tasks and many businesses worldwide, including organizations dealing with clients, health organizations, public and private bodies that deal with financing and education, are rapidly growingly interested in their usage as it provides solutions for all tasks, be they of technical nature, professional tasks or customer services, for example. These organization organizations need standard ways of determining whether AI systems behave predictably, follow the regulations that guide their operation, safeguard sensitive data and act according to humans’ directives in many diverse circumstances.
International coordination in governing AI is also evident in the global initiative.
In the most recent years, many organizations throughout the globe have drafted codes, voluntary policies and laws to provide oversight for AI, including its safety and ethical implementation, data protection and security risks. ITU’s plan works well together with such country initiatives. By encouraging widely agreed technical standards that will ensureoperability among international devices and software products, this effort goes further to complement these national policies and guidelines.
Many major tech companies, including the U.S-headquartered AI development giants like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft have expanded their investment in AI agents over the course of the year. The leading AI creators-from Anthropic to Mistral, OpenAI, Google, and Meta-are all introducing AI agents that can autonomously complete work processes for tasks that run from writing and bug detection to financial accounting and customer support. As these capabilities further mature, many expect industry-driven technical benchmarks will become crucial to the widely felt adoption of AI agents.
‘We’re moving into a phase where AI is critical global infrastructure.
Standardizing what we mean by “trust” for autonomous AI systems will enable wider and safer use,’ stated ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, referencing an array of technical areas the group plans to work on, including how agents can be more dependable, secure and accountable. The tech industry, while welcoming broader collaboration, cautions that technical solutions shouldn’t be imposed. ‘International standards development for trust will facilitate our collective journey into this next phase of artificial intelligence,’ said James Baker, chief legal and policy officer at U.S.-based AI company Open Melinda in a statement from the ITU. ‘For technology organizations working hard to bring safe and beneficial AI agents to the world, standards offer a valuable path for transparency and shared understanding.’
The ITU said its move does not aim to hinder the progress of AI.
Rather, it wants to give technology builders and governments an agreed framework through which the deployment of an expanding generation of smarter AI systems can move ahead, with fewer fears. ‘Instead of holding back the development of these promising technologies, we aim to foster the development of a consensus-based technical and ethical framework that supports the innovation of smarter, safer, and more inclusive AI technologies that can accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to global prosperity,’ Ms Bogdan-Martin said.
