Shein Could Target September or October for Hong Kong IPO

Fast-fashion e-commerce giant Shein is targeting a Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) as early as September or October, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. If successful, the listing would be among Asia’s largest IPOs of the year and represent a significant turning point for the company. The ultra-fast fashion behemoth’s planned IPO comes after several years of exploration of its options for public markets.

The company had considered the US, but decided on Hong Kong instead as a move to overcome the regulatory and political obstacles it faced when pursuing the US market listing.

It is unclear at this time, whether or not Shein has approached a bank or has started with a formal filing with regulators. The people familiar with the matter said preparations were continuing but the deal may not get through until September at the earliest, if the company has been satisfied the market is ready to receive an IPO. (Reuters) Founded in 2008 as an online-only fashion website for women, Shein expanded rapidly into thousands of new products and customers. Shein uses real-time customer trends identified through online analytics, in addition to efficient supply chain, and flexible manufacturing processes, to introduce as many as 6,000 new styles per day.

The company was questioned regarding its operations by authorities, such as how it manages labor practices, how it operates supply chain management and why is customs non-compliance an issue for Shein.

Its U.S.-listed rivals, including Alibaba-owned AliExpress, ASOS and Pinduoduo’s e-commerce platforms, among others, may benefit, as the current climate for global IPOs, although warming, still needs more validation from investors on growth of companies. Shein’s offering would fuel its expansion. Shein can also continue its diversification from fashion, and develop new products in cosmetics, homeware, and lifestyle.

As Hong Kong's IPO market gets some life back into its system. We have seen the listing activity of various technology and consumer stocks picking up as businesses opt for more domestic financing avenues. We can be hopeful and optimistically positive that companies of Shein's caliber would provide impetus to Hong Kong's listing arena.

However, whether or not investor sentiments would support a larger listing like that of Shein depends on various factors like its past operations, future growth prospects.

The apparel industry is extremely competitive and with several companies already battling for consumer mind space and pocket money, and the regulatory scrutiny that Shein already faces might lead to tough investor sentiment. Though with all these in consideration, if Shein's planning goes as per its expectations, then September or October may turn out to be a month of big financial events in the market and also a crucial stepping stone in the journey of Shein.
