Oaxaca Schools Boost Sustainability Education with New UN Partnership

A new Sustainability education program is coming to schools in Oaxaca Mexico. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Mexico and Oaxaca's Ministry of Education have signed a new agreement to help students learn how to protect nature and care for their communities.

The program will focus on upper secondary schools. Students will learn about saving plants and animals, using natural resources wisely and building a better future. New lesson plans, teacher guides and learning tools will also be created for schools.

The new work builds on the Kuxatur project which began in 2020. The project supports safe and sustainable tourism while protecting nature along the coast of Oaxaca. Since it started, more than 5,000 people have taken part in training. These include local people, tour guides, business owners and public workers.

UNDP Mexico said the new program will help young people understand why it is important to care for the planet. Students will also learn skills that can help them find jobs in tourism and other fields that protect the environment.

The partners also plan to create a special guide for tourism students. The guide will teach them how to protect biodiversity while helping local communities grow in a safe and responsible way.

The program supports the United Nations goal for quality education. The UN says many children around the world still face learning problems after the COVID 19 pandemic. It warns that by 2030, about 84 million children could still be out of school. Nearly 300 million students may not have basic reading and math skills.

Leaders hope this new partnership will help schools teach students how to care for nature, support their communities and build a cleaner and healthier future.
