Samsung Electronics Secures $200 Billion Broadcom AI Chip Partnership, Strengthening Foundry Business

Samsung Electronics has reportedly nabbed a $200 billion deal with Broadcom to manufacture artificial intelligence (AI) chips. A landmark, multiyear deal would mark a huge step in Samsung's quest to become a stronger rival in the global chip foundry market.

The partnership agreement between the two giants is said to have centered on Broadcom's custom AI chips used in cloud and high-performance computing. The agreement is expected to have a profound effect on Samsung’s semiconductor foundry business as well. Samsung Electronics ranks as the second largest semiconductor business after Taiwan’s Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) on that list of world's leading semiconductor manufacturers. But the company was eager to broaden its customers and to close the gap with the rivals.

Currently, one of the fastest-growing custom AI chip suppliers is Broadcom. The company designs tailor-made processors and accelerators for high-performance systems for cloud and hyperscale enterprise clients as a complement and a source for custom designs. The demand for these accelerators has ballooned.

Investment into global AI infrastructure is seeing demand increase for specialized chips that run next-generation technology and models for complex Artificial intelligence use cases.

The pace at which demand for these specialty chips-used for training and operating complicated artificial intelligence models-is picking up pace among semiconductor makers who rush to expand manufacturing capabilities and facilities with this burgeoning global investment in artificial intelligence data centers.

For Samsung's foundry business and it being one of the industry's biggest manufacturers, the Broadcom contract would solidify revenue growth and market position. Having a large and ongoing manufacturing deal will boost the company’s consistent output, confidence in its more advance fabrication capabilities, and potentially attract additional businesses to opt for Samsung in the future. Broadcom has seen its demand for custom chips for use in cloud and server environments surge with global companies’ plans to increase investments in data centers.

The number of companies interested in expanding their data centers is expected to steadily increase.

Broadcom's demand for specialized chips for its diverse set of clients that include many big names in computing services indicates sustained investment.
