China just began making its own deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, a milestone in its plan to develop an indigenous semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign chip-making technology. The move comes as Beijing significantly increased investment in domestic chip production technologies amid U.S.-led export restrictions on advanced chip manufacturing gear. DUV lithography machines are essential in chip production as they employ deep ultraviolet light energy to transmit delicate circuit patterns to wafers for manufacturing semiconductors that make up devices such as smartphones, computers, automotive technology, industrial equipment, and telecommunication network infrastructure.
Though less advanced than the EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography equipment used to create leading-edge semiconductors, DUV is crucial for the manufacturing of the vast majority of commercially produced semiconductors and could also be utilized to create relatively advanced silicon by using complex, costly and time-intensive multi-patterning processes.
Following several years of strategic investment and research in which Beijing prioritized investment in chip-manufacturing equipment, materials, software and process development as part of its bid to acquire comprehensive domestic semiconductor capabilities, China achieved this milestone. U.S.-led sanctions aimed at hindering the production and sale of cutting-edge chips and chip equipment have prompted Chinese tech players to accelerate efforts to find domestic alternatives for all segments of the semiconductor industry. “That is a significant step,” said an industry researcher, who said while the locally built equipment may not substitute for the world’s most advanced lithography tools in the short term, it would enhance China’s ability to “produce fairly established and mature technologies without relying so much on overseas.” Building up comparable capabilities would still take years, semiconductor makers acknowledge as manufacturing a chip require more than just lithography tools – it relies on integrated manufacturing across, for instance, optics, lasers, resists, etchers and metrology gear.
On the other hand, increased domestic availability of the tools could offer Chinese chip makers more security from supply chain disruptions and greater opportunity to scale output from existing and new chip foundries, to supply the huge market of consumer electronics devices and vehicles.
The global competition on building indigenous capacity for chip manufacturing is already raging, as the world’s governments pump in billions of U.S. Dollars for fostering local chip capacity for high-value use cases fromAIand cloud computing to cars, telecom and defense capabilities, to reduce dependencies on supply chains dominated by just a handful of countries. Still, most industry professionals regard manufacturing of lithography machines as the most challenging of the entire semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
The leading companies, such as lithography tech provider ASML from the Netherlands, have years of refinement process and rigorous innovation. The rollout of Made-in-China DUV lithography machines is an another important chapter in China’s holistic Semiconductor push. Further progress is indeed necessary for to contend with the world-leading technologies, but it is already testament of China’s advancement in enhancing its semiconductor ecosystem and its dependence on overseas inputs.
