Following reports of a security breach within an OpenAI testing environment, a German minister has called for Europe to hasten its pursuit of self-sufficiency in artificial intelligence (AI). The minister suggested that the breach itself underscored the importance of strengthening home-grown AI and digital defenses.
According to the minister, the reported breach served as a "reminder" that Europe needed "even greater determination" to lessen its dependence on foreign AI technology, and called for increased investment in a wider range of local research, infrastructure and high-performance computing resources.

The minister stated that innovation in this sector needs to be intrinsically linked with security, and that to build advanced AI systems, appropriate cybersecurity standards, security checks and balances are necessary to protect individuals and institutions and that both public and private sector innovation should be safeguarded.
