Meta Now Lets AI Agents Handle the Boring Parts of WhatsApp Business Setup

Meta is introducing a new feature that will enable businesses to automate the technical process of onboarding a new WhatsApp Business account, enabling AIs to handle responsibilities that would have previously needed a developer to use Meta's products and APIs.

The firm launched the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, which is a Model Context Protocol server that links up the AI coding agents to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Developers employ agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT to make configuration changes, and issue natural-language commands rather than working through each step.

The updated service aims to make it easier for companies interested in using WhatsApp for customer communication. One way it wants to do this is with the help of AI agents that can do things like set up business accounts and handle messaging infrastructure and other technical tasks related to working on the platform.

MCP also continues to grow as a widely used means of facilitating external software and service integrations for the AI agents. Rather than just coding or answering questions, external MCP-based connections enable agents to have access to other platforms and act on behalf of the user.

Meta: As for Meta, introducing this feature to WhatsApp Business is part of a wider effort to get more AI deep into the heart of business. The company has launched Meta Business Agent, a dedicated AI to help answer customer questions, qualify leads and deliver personalized support through WhatsApp.

The newest iteration would handle another aspect of the process: first, connecting and setting up companies. Giving AI agents the ability to set up tech would reduce the barrier to entry for smaller firms that don't have a team of developers, or that aren't very familiar with business APIs.

This case also demonstrates a shift from one AI agent creating content to actually using and running programs. Rather than just outlining what a developer should do, a connected AI agent can perform several configuration actions and help finish a workflow.

The upside for companies is a quicker and more user-friendly route into the ecosystem of WhatsApp's billions of users. For Meta, making its business platform more accessible might help more companies find their way into WhatsApp to support customer service, sell products and run automated conversations.

The move follows Meta's recent $13 billion investment into AI during the third quarter of the year, says Statista. Meta recently announced Meta One, a new subscription service that will bring new AI tools to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Collectively, all of this clearly indicates Meta's future focus of AI being not just a chatbot for your users, but a layer that runs business apps and automation on previously manual digital workflows.
