Personal Finance report highlights need to track campaign money

A new report has looked at how citizen groups track political and campaign money in five Asian countries.

The report was launched by ANFREL and International IDEA. It covers India, Indonesia, Mongolia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The report says these countries face many problems with campaign finance. Financial reports can be unclear or incomplete. Some data is also hard for the public to find.

Online political ads are another growing challenge. Campaigns now use social media to reach voters. But rules for tracking money spent online are still limited in many places.

Citizen groups are helping fill these gaps. They check public records and compare them with other sources. Some groups also study online ads and watch campaign events.

In India, civil society groups make candidate finance data easier to find. In Indonesia, groups compare official reports with online ad data.

In Mongolia, groups check financial reports with the national ereceipt system. In the Philippines, groups use data tools to study campaign spending.

In Sri Lanka, groups use public reports and information requests. They have also started legal cases against some candidates who did not follow campaign finance rules.

The report says strong campaign finance laws are not enough. People also need access to clear financial data. Election bodies need better tools to check spending. Digital campaign activity also needs closer monitoring.

The report offers a new framework to help citizen groups monitor campaign money. It gives steps for checking laws, finding financial data, studying online spending and reporting problems.

The report shows that citizen groups can play an important role in making campaign finance more open. Better tracking can help citizens and journalists understand how political money is used across Asia.
