Microsoft Revamps Copilot With Code Generation, Agentic AI Tools

Microsoft has announced a big new update to its Copilot AI assistant, introducing code generation and agentic abilities as well as integrations with core Microsoft 365 apps in an effort to position the platform as the hub for work productivity.

The improved Copilot features a new feature that creates code and interacts with code in the AI interface. Microsoft is also releasing an always-on AI agent to take on a wider range of tasks on its own, taking the Copilot concept beyond its past function as a question-and-answer bot.

Microsoft is also integrating Word, Excel and PowerPoint into Copilot. Customers will be able to use those tools without leaving the Copilot experience, weaving document authoring, table development and slide design directly into the overall AI experience.

These also correspond to Microsoft's larger move toward "agentic" AI, where the systems can plan and carry out multi-step operations rather than responding to each prompt. Microsoft has said that it is turning Copilot into AI coworkers that can handle longer-running work in various domains.

Microsoft has also been looking to allow multiple models and agents within its ecosystem. Microsoft has incorporated models from companies such as Anthropic, in addition to its own models and those from OpenAI, allowing users greater choice in who drives different workloads.

The new, improved Microsoft is also entering an AI assistant market that is getting more cutthroat. Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta are building AI programs that are able to do more on behalf of users - as opposed to just produce text, search or images. The world is quickly turning into a new contest of how well AI agents can do real world work.

Microsoft wrote: The modern workplace is one of the largest battlegrounds for this competitive edge. And for Microsoft, it's a battle we care about. Microsoft 365 Copilot already has over 20 million paid seats and usage of our first-party agents has grown significantly this year.

Microsoft has continued building out the infrastructure for its agent strategy. Its Copilot platform aims to wire data, apps and tools to AI models, and it includes governance, security and spending controls for organizations.

The Copilot overhaul is part of a larger shift by Microsoft to build an ai-centric way of working and take its product to a central part of an integrated and conversational environment where users can chat, author code, generate office documents and hand over big jobs to ai agents. The company now needs to show the tools can produce practical results.
