The UK government has shared a new plan to help businesses. One big part of this plan is to lower energy industry bills for many companies across the country.
The new 10-year industrial strategy will help over 7,000 businesses by cutting their energy costs by up to 25%. This will happen by removing some extra charges that support green energy programs.
A new plan called the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme will start in 2027. It will save businesses up to £40 for each megawatt-hour of electricity they use.
Some large companies, like those that make steel, glass, and chemicals, will get even more help. Right now, they get a 60% discount on network charges. This discount will go up to 90% in 2026.
The government says this plan will give businesses the support and confidence they need to grow, invest, and create jobs. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said this is a “turning point” for the UK’s economy.
The plan also includes other steps:
Spending more money on job training to help people learn new skills.
Making it easier for top workers from around the world to move to the UK.
Hiring more planners to speed up building work for new projects.
Putting more money into science, technology, and AI research.
The government hopes these changes will help create over one million well-paid jobs in the next ten years.
Some people support the plan. They say it will help fix problems like high energy prices and a lack of skilled workers.
Others are not happy. They say the government is spending too much money and not solving the real problem of why energy costs are so high.
Still, many agree that UK businesses need help to compete with companies in other countries like Germany and France, where energy is cheaper.
The full plan for five key industries will be shared soon. The goal is to help the UK grow stronger, smarter, and greener.
