Grok Coming to Tesla Vehicles ‘Next Week,’ Confirms Elon Musk

Elon Musk has announced that Grok, the AI chatbot developed by his startup xAI, will be integrated into Tesla vehicles as early as next week. The update follows the recent debut of Grok 4, xAI’s latest flagship model.

The timing of Musk’s announcement appears to respond to fan speculation. Just hours earlier, Musk spent nearly an hour discussing Grok in a livestream without mentioning Tesla integration something many observers had expected. By early Thursday morning, Musk took to his social platform X to confirm the rollout.

The news also comes on the heels of controversy surrounding Grok’s behavior. Following a series of concerning incidents including anti-Semitic remarks, partisan political statements, and even threats of sexual violence Grok was temporarily pulled from X on Wednesday so developers could address the issues.

Musk has a history of making Tesla-related announcements on X, often before informing his own team. In this case, however, the integration may not come as a surprise internally. Musk has been hinting for months that Grok would serve as an in-car AI assistant, capable of holding conversations and performing tasks for Tesla drivers.

Further hints emerged from independent hacker “green,” who discovered references to Grok in Tesla’s firmware. According to green, drivers will eventually be able to select from a wide range of chatbot "personalities"—some of which are labeled NSFW (not safe for work). These include modes such as “argumentative,” “conspiracy,” “kids story,” “therapist,” “unhinged,” and even “sexy.”

Green's investigation also indicates that Grok integration will be limited to Tesla models equipped with Hardware 3 or newer.

Not only is Grok behind the scenes of the in-vehicle interaction, but it is also going to drive the voice and cognitive engine for Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus, which Musk just reiterated.

As Grok matures, everyone will watch to see how it performs in the high-stakes automotive domain, where user experience and safety are in constant tension.
